The half marathon left me with a pulled hamstring.
One of the three major muscles at the back of my leg at the point where it reaches the knee right at the back is pulling, feeling tense with a dull pain not letting me run for more than 10 minutes without complaint.
I had a quick look around on the internet and a few things stuck.
a. Hamstring injuries take 3 weeks to recover, not 1 and a bit.
b. Hamstring stretches are the most important ones. Apparently...
c. The way I sit at my chair, legs folded under, is BAD for hamstrings.
So there, no park run or race for me for the next couple of weeks at least.

On with the next race
The next race is Shinfield 10K, on the 2nd of May 2011, at 10:30 in the morning!
As the name suggests, it is a 10K run, so about 1h 10' maybe less...
It is organized by the Reading Road Runners [http://www.readingroadrunners.org/] which is a running club i might join when I get a bit more comfortable with the whole running thing.

Two days later...
Life beyond the Half Marathon, let's not get too obsessed about it right?
Monday (yesterday) was pretty hard to walk. Up down the stairs in my house was an effort but today it feels just right! No limping, just a few sore bits here and there as it should be.
Oh by the way this is the official message from the organizers:
So onwards and upwards, as Erich Honecker would say; the training is still on!
By the end of the week I might even manage to do a recovery 5k run.
I need to improve my posture, as I seem to run like I was shot at the back by arrows and spears.
I need those 5k runs under 30 minutes constant!!!!!!! I DOOOOOOO!!!!

Dear Leon,
Congratulations you completed this year's Reading Half Marathon in a time of 02:39:21.
Your split times were:
5K – 00:36:05
10K – 01:10:08
15K – 01:47:13
20K – 02:30:23 (jeez that was a slow 5k, says me)

2011 Reading Half Marathon
The race is over, what a lovely race it was.
Most fun and joy and general tomfoolery occurred before mile 10, after that my pride had to be swallowed.
It was an effort of balancing what appeared to be a tired leg - or two - almost pulling the wrong way, and try to maintain some of the good time I was doing and having till then.
Still, taking it easy has it's rewards, one can down loads of free lucozade for starts. No injuries either! Plus an easy time to beat on my next half mar.
Most of all, yes it was fun, I got a medal, loads of super food and a silver foil cape.
I am jealous of my training mate Simon. He did it in 2:13, I did it in 2:39 and this is exactly the Dx over his training and mine.
WELL DONE SIMON MATE!
I was very happy to see his family on the side cheering. Also the Westons were around in a couple of places cheering for me too! Thank god I spotted them early the second time around and got back into the running mode!
Lovely to see super marshal Angela, again lucky she watched me race towards the end, a mile earlier and I would have to stop and chat, I was going that slow.
My sweet wife and kids come to see me too. Joy took a video of me bragging I haven't walked once! I think it almost caused a diplomatic episode on facebook, thanks Sarah, your sense of humor did not translate that well, so it got censored!
Joy urged me to train and also to take it easy, she did support me a lot and today she took all the weight of my feet which is very wise of her! I'll thank her later.
Yup this lovely map above is half a marathon. Would I be able to make it a full one? no way at my current fitness level.
Which brings me to the conclusion of this blog. I got to keep the training in a more strict regime.
Avoiding injury does just that, keep on running!

Race Pack is here!!!
Yes! The race pack has arrived a couple of days ago, it has the number, a t-shirt, a microchip and a tag!
MY NUMBER: 10704
A nice big number and apparently the word WHITE next to it is based on my choice on how much time it will take me to finish... LOTS!
Also I tried my foot yesterday, it seems to be ok, so the race is on!
LAST, Please Support my Charity, it is a nice thing to know that all this is not just a way to let of some steam, it's not a big deal to go out running we are all designed for it and it is fun. But when it comes to opportunities of fund raising this is excellent!
So click on DONATE for justgiving.com next to this blog entry.

UPDATE - T minus 4 Days
Yup 4 days till the half marathon.
Two things.
A. my foot is better but I haven't run it yet
B. I haven't run for about 10 days now so bugger knows how i am going back.
and even as I type this I am busy at work... Not the best week to prepare for a half marathon...

Uphill and Downhill
I might regret this run,
even before I got out I felt a slight pull on my right foot, I guess I wanted to see if it goes away once I get the foot warm by running. Well, it sort of worked but not for long, so I had to cut this run short at 6k.
When I got back home I immediately filled the bath with very cold water and sat in it for a few minutes to avoid any swelling. It felt much better and there was no swelling or anything nasty. Still later in bed it kept me up a bit, mostly worrying about it rather than aching.
I won't push it, I think I had a lucky escape, or it remains to be seen; So now I am resting it.
R.I.C.E; which stands for Rest Ice Compression Elevation
So my next run will be Thursday if not Friday the earliest, and god's willing it'll be back to normal.

Cold cold run
I was wearing my lucky hat!
This was an easy recovery run from the long run on Tuesday. I was mostly hungry because I had 2 steaks with my name on it, yes, Beef!
Let's hope things will only get better, i wanna run on nice sunny warm days, not cold moody evenings. I really hope Sunday the 20th of March will be a perfect day.
OH IT'S GONNA BE SO MUCH FUN!!!! WITH A T-SHIRT!

and then the run got easy...
Yup I couldn't believe it myself! This is a good run and well within the relaxed and sustainable pace I want to keep during the Half Mar!
So this week I have two more runs, one Short and Fast Pace on Thursday and one Long and Easy Pace on Sat/Sun.
Then we enter week T minus 2 and possibly one of the same, a short followed by the last long one. No need to fret about this tho.
You read this and think, why is this guy doing it.
The reason is here!
But look, on the side there on this page, you can just click and donate!!!
